A tentative program schedule is out around a couple of months in advance, go through it and mark the talks/sessions which you want to attend.

You would not want to miss the sessions to complete your work. Do not delay and plan to work on anything once you are there. Prepare your talk/poster well in advance. There are some events which are free of cost but have very limited seats. If it is possible, register as soon as possible. It is an expensive meeting both in terms of time and money, so do all the prep necessary to make the best of it. The forms are out in October, make sure to fill those (very limited seats). Students can get a volunteering opportunity which waives off their registration fee.Don’t be shy of talking to people about your work. This is the best networking opportunity.AGU will launch an app for the meeting a couple of week in advance. The days are long, sessions start from 7.30AM and go up to 6PM or later sometimes. It does not cover any other workshops/field trips/luncheons/etc. The registration only includes the oral and poster sessions of the meeting, coffee and beer at 3.30pm (there is a long queue for that!).People from all the fields of Geosciences from across the world come together each year in 2nd week of December to showcase research and build collaborations. It is truly overwhelming, so it is better to do some homework before one attends it. I recently attended the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco, and if you don't know how big that is - more than 30,000 people attended it.
